Participate in our Research!

We are always looking for kids and adults to participate in our research studies. If you think you or your kids would be interested in being involved, please contact us! Your participation is entirely voluntary, and could help us better understand the way that people learn to read. It is also a great way to learn about neuroscience, psychology, and the scientific process in general.

Kids and Adults

We are looking for kids who are skilled readers aged 7-16, or kids with a history of reading problems aged 9-16.

We are also looking for adults aged 18-30, who are either skilled readers, or who have a history of reading problems.

Visual and Auditory Perception: We hypothesize that some children have a problem filtering out visual or auditory noise in order to recognize certain letters and sounds, and this leads to specific reading difficulties.

Study participants will play several computer games that will help us to determine whether particular kinds of perception problems are more common among children with reading difficulties. We will also play some word games that will help to assess reading, cognitive, and language achievement.

Brain Imaging Experiments: Some study participants will qualify for the brain imaging portion of our study. This part of the study is totally optional. This study will examine the pathways in the brain among the visual and language areas, potentially shedding light on the reasons some children have such difficulty learning to read printed words with accuracy and speed.

During the brain scan, which lasts about an hour, you will be inside the MRI machine playing some word games, while we take pictures of your brain. We’ll even give you a picture of your brain to show your friends!
