Cathode Ray Tubes

MP.1(1) - Kinetic Energy Effect

This glass tube was evacuated and contains a light glass wheel with mica vanes mounted to roll on a glass track. When a high voltage is applied across the tube, electrons flow from one side to the other. They hit the mica vanes, turning the wheel that rolls along the glass track to the opposite side.

The tube is mounted on a 15 cm tall stand and it is 20 cm in length.

NOTE: The mica vanes wheel does not seem to be affected much by the electrons.

MP.1(2) - Shadow Effect - The Maltese Cross

This conical shaped tube has a metal Maltese cross near its wider end, that can be flipped vertically. A high voltage is applied between the cathode (narrow end of the tube) and the anode (on the support, mid-way through the tube). The cross will obstruct the electron flow, creating a shadow on the fluorescent screen at the end of the tube.

The tube is mounted on a 15 cm tall stand and it is 20 cm in length.
