The Weingart Center occupies the former El Ray Hotel. In the early twentieth century, its location near the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific Railroad Depots, a few blocks to the east, provided this hotel a competitive advantage. After all passenger rail traffic was consolidated some distance away at Union Station, this and other nearby hotels lost that advantage. Today the Weingart Center offers numerous services to downtown residents in need, including 600 beds nightly to homeless men and women.
