Robinsons Department Store (former)

Seventh, between Hope and Grand

This last of the stand-alone downtown department stores closed its doors in 1991. The building dates from 1925. Today in downtown Los Angeles, and many other large CBDs, department stores are located in suburban-like, indoor shopping centers. The first such center in any US city, the current Macy's Plaza is just west of the old Robinson's. The revolving restaurant atop the Hyatt Hotel, which is also part of the Macy's Plaza development, is visible in the above photo. Recently, plans were underway to fill up the first floor with a Rite Aid drugstore and an Office Max supplies store.
