Goals & Objectives

What is America's place in a global society?  Where do the borders of America stop when its influence has been so pervasive on world cultures?How can we understand globalization, its consequences, and how to manage it? 


Japan SIP examines America’s relationship to the world through the lenses of Pacific Rim cities: Los Angeles, California and various cities in Japan (Tokyo, Hiroshima, Kyoto, and Osaka).  Students will be introducted to the cultural, political, economic, and social exchanges crucial to the U.S.-Japan relationship.  They will study ethnic identity and nation formation, technological advances that have lead to Japan’s global prominence on the world market, and the importance of mutual trade (broadly defined) between the two countries.


Students will:
  1. Begin to discover how American society is viewed by others in order to foster a critical world view and increase commitments to social justice issues
  2. Increase their awareness of cultural attitudes and enhance their analytical and critical thinking skills through real world experiences
  3. Learn new perspectives on international issues
  4. Prepare to work in an increasingly diverse and international workplace
  5. Gain confidence as they learn new things about themselves, others, and the world
  6. Begin to imagine ways to turn theory into actions that are specific, concrete, and individualized
  7. Experience language, media, and popular culture within different social contexts
  8. Prepare themselves for a life of engagement as effective global and local citizens
