Summary:

America was founded on principles of opportunity and inclusion for all. Some viewed President Obama’s recent executive order to grant work visas to unauthorized immigrant youth as an effort to extend these values. Others portrayed the President’s move as though it was an amnesty package, although – much to the frustration of advocates – it includes no clear road map to citizenship. Professor Olivas will present the social, political and legal ramifications of the rhetoric and discourse framing immigrant issues.

Description:

Join University of Houston Law Center Professor Michael Olivas for this discussion on the impacts of negative discourse on school-aged newcomers and how it affects welcome strategies for all immigrants, and more broadly, the implications for immigrant integration.

Michael A. Olivas, Ph.D., J.D., an expert in business law, higher education law and immigration law and policy, is the William B. Bates Distinguished Chair of Law at the University of Houston Law Center and the Director of UH’s Institute of Higher Education Law & Governance. He has authored or co-authored 14 books and has been elected to membership in the American Law Institute and the National Academy of Education, the only person to have been selected to both honor academies. Both the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) and the Hispanic Bar Association of Houston have given him awards for lifetime achievement. Since 2002, he serves as a director on the MALDEF Board.

This event is presented by the Center for the Study of Immigrant Integration and co-sponsored by USC El Centro Chicano, USC Center for Urban Education, and IDEAS Movement at USC, Tomás Rivera Policy Institute.
