Description:
"Arthur Schnitzler - Being Jewish" reaches deep into the mind and soul of the renowned Austrian writer and dramatist, famous for his frank treatment of sex and psyche. Based on his journals, his correspondence, and his dreams, this staged dramatic reading with actors Annabelle Gurwitch and Sam Tsoutsouvas focuses on Schnitzler's often conflicted feelings about being a Jew. Whether he is sparring with Theodor Herzl, founder of modern Zionism, or dealing with an angry anti-Semitic mob on a theater stage, "Arthur Schnitzler - Being Jewish" shows the author at his most personal and candid.
The performance, co-sponsored by the USC Max Kade Institute for Austrian, German, and Swiss Studies and the Louchheim School of Judaic Studies at USC, will take place at the USC Forum, on Thursday, September 13 at 4:00 PM. It will be followed by a question and answer session with the author's grandson, Peter Schnitzler, and a distinguished, international panel of scholars of Schnitzler and the politics and culture of turn-of-the-century Vienna. Wine and cheese reception to follow.
