Sophie Cabot Black was raised on a small farm in New England. She received her B.A. from Marlboro College and her M.F.A. from Columbia University. She has taught at the New School, Rutgers, and Columbia University. Her poems have appeared in numerous magazines, journals, and anthologies. Her first poetry collection, The Misunderstanding of Nature, received the Norma Farber Book Award from the Poetry Society of America; her second, The Descent, earned the Connecticut Book Award and was nominated for the 2005 Colorado Book Award. Her third collection, The Exchange, was published in 2013 to broad acclaim.
