Take a study break with the Middle East Studies Program for an unplugged session of audiopolitics.

From the post-Arab Spring world, Ryan Harvey & Kareem Samara bring hard-hitting political lyrics to the stage backed by a unique blend of American folk guitar and the flowing sounds of the Arabic `oud. The songs draw from their recent experiences in the Heumensoord refugee camp in the Netherlands as well as on the Greek island of Lesvos, which has received thousands of Middle Eastern refugees, among others, via Turkey and elsewhere. Both musicians are from Firebrand Records, a newly minted record label launched by Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and Ryan Harvey

This event is free and open to the public.

Location: Fishbowl Chapel

Bios:
Kareem Samara is a British Palestinian musician and activist. A multi instrumentalist and composer, he explores the electro acoustic possibilities of traditional arabic music and instrumentation. Using loops, he creates flowing Oud lines that weave between tabla and daff rhythms, sounding both familiar and contemporary. As an activist he is a founding member of Artists For Palestine UK and London Palestine Action.

Ryan Harvey takes up where Phil Ochs and Woody Guthrie left off, presenting powerful, insightful songs and humorous stories of political analysis joined by a sincere and personal stage presence. An activist, journalist, and song-writer, he has long worked on combining performance, education, and action. In 2015 he launched Firebrand Records with Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello to provide a home for politically radical and socially conscious artists worldwide. He lives in Baltimore, MD.
