Summary:

Father James Heft, Alton Brooks Prof. of Religion, will speak on what is meant today by the idea "religious freedom." Some people think this also means that there should be freedom of conscience. Others object, saying that, at least for Catholics, you must accept authoritative Church teaching or risk ceasing to be Catholic. There are many opinons floating about on all this. This presentation will explore the nature of conscience, its freedom, its formation, and the characteristics of authentic Catholicism.

Description:

Please join us for cocktails and conversation at thethe fourth and final lecture in the fall Plumleigh Speakers Series, as Alton Brooks Professor of Religion and President of the Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies Fr. James Heft., S.M. addresses the topic of forming one's conscience against the backdrop of a Church that may -- or may not -- fully reflect your own personal values.

"Much today is made of religious freedom," Fr. Heft says. "Some people think this also means that there should be freedom of conscience. Others object, saying that, at least for Catholics, you must accept authoritative Church teaching or risk ceasing to be Catholic. There are many opinons floating about on all this. This presentation will explore the nature of conscience, its freedom, its formation, and the characteristics of authentic Catholicism."

An engaging and charismatic speaker, Fr. Heft's lectures draw listeners from all walks of academic, religious and secular life. A cocktail reception will precede the lecture.
