ABSTRACT: Professor Vasquez' paper tests the proposition that peaceful dyads consist of those that do not have territorial disputes. Dyads that have at least one militarized interstate dispute (MID) from 1816-2001 are compared on the basis of those that have never gone to war to those that have gone to war at least once. The former are predicted to consist of dyads that do not have territorial disputes. This hypothesis is also compared with the democratic peace claim that peaceful dyads are those consisting of joint democracies. The relative impact of the territorial peace and democratic peace hypotheses are assessed. The analysis is conducted on the 1816-1945, 1946-1989, and 1990-2001 periods.
