The Department of English Announces the Sixteenth Annual
William James Undergraduate Essay Prize
1. Prizes may be granted for any critical essay (no poetry or fiction) written to satisfy the requirements of an English Department course during the period April 2010 to April 2011.
2. Prizes may be awarded for two competitions:
(a) ENGL 400-499 courses, first place $400, second place $300.
(b) ENGL 200-399 courses, first place $300, second place $200.
3. All currently enrolled USC undergraduates may compete; contestants need not be English majors or minors.
4. Students should submit one essay to Rebecca Woods in THH 404. Submissions should be clean copies (without marginal notes or comments by the instructor). Essays will be judged anonymously, so the writer's name must not appear in the pages of the essay.
5. Include a cover sheet stating the writer's name, ID number, phone number, and email address, as well as the course for which the essay was originally written.
Deadline for submissions: 3 pm, Friday, April 22, 2011

2010 competitions
The English Department announces three competitions
for USC’s undergraduate writers!
The William James Undergraduate Essay Prize awards up to $500 for
best critical literary essay.
This prize is granted for critical essays only, written between April 2009 and April 2010. Any critical essay written for an English course may be eligible. Submissions should not exceed 10 pages in length. Any currently enrolled USC undergraduate may compete, and need not be an English major.
Submission should include one clean essay copy with a cover sheet with the student’s name, student ID number, phone number, email address, and the course for which the essay was originally written. Student name should not appear anywhere on the essay itself, as the submissions are judged anonymously.
Deadline: Friday, April 9, 2010 by 3 pm, in

In conjunction with this year’s College of Letters, Arts, & Sciences, Visions and Voices, “The Melville Project,” Creative Writing, and Comparative Literature, the English Department is awarding the Melville Writing Prize to two undergraduates for:
Best Critical Essay ($225) on any work by Herman Melville, or on an artistic endeavor clearly inspired by Melville
Best Creative Endeavor ($225) in any media, taking its inspiration from a Melville text or Melvillean motif that demonstrates serious engagement with the author
Submissions for the Melville Writing Prize are due by 3 pm
