Biographical Sketch

I was born and raised in New York City and received my undergraduate degree at Williams College, writing an honors thesis under the direction of Karen Merrill. I also have completed non-degree coursework at The University of Edinburgh and City College of New York. Before grad school, I worked variously as a reporter, freelance writer, athletics coach, and private tutor.

I welcome any inquiries concerning the history department or USC.

Research

Summary Statement of Research Interests

  • My interests lie generally in modern American history and more specifically on the intersections of cultural history, especially movies, and social/political history. I am trying to understand what it meant for more than 60 percent of the national population to go to the movies every week. What influence did movies have upon viewers? How did this influence compare with other media and modes of leisure? To what extent do movies reflect broader cultural ideas and to what extent do they shape them? These are some of the questions that motivate my research.
