Biographical Sketch

Daniel Lidar is a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Chemistry at USC, where he has been since July '05. He also holds a cross appointment in Physics. He received a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1997. He was a postdoctoral fellow at UC Berkeley from 1997 to 2000. In 2000 he joined the faculty at the University of Toronto as an Assistant Professor of Theoretical Chemistry, and was promoted with tenure to the rank of Associate Professor in 2004. His research focuses on control of quantum systems, with a particular emphasis on quantum information processing. Lidar is the founding Director of the USC Center for Quantum Information Science & Technology. He is the recipient of a number of awards and honors, including a Sloan Foundation Fellowship (2003), and the Young Explorer Award (2002) given by the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research for the top 20 researchers in Canada under age 40. In 2007 he was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society and a Senior Member of the IEEE. In 2010 he was listed as one of the top 20 authors of the decade in Quantum Computers by Science Watch. Lidar is the author or co-author of more than 130 technical research articles, and holds four patents.

Description of Research

Summary Statement of Research Interests

Dynamics and control of open quantum systems, quantum information science, and the physical implementation of quantum information processors. Current scientific interests include: • Closed-loop learning algorithms and open-loop methods for reducing decoherence in open quantum systems, with emphasis on quantum information processing • Quantum computation with naturally available interactions, in particular in solid state devices such as quantum dots • Theory of development of small quantum information processors using currently available or near-term technology • Efficient algorithms for simulation of physical systems on quantum computers • Quantum phase transitions and their connection to quantum information theory • Adiabatic quantum computing and its implementation in real physical systems
