Description of Research |
|
Summary Statement of Research Interests |
|
| Professor Saleur is interested in low dimensional quantum field theories and statistical mechanics. His work is at the border between hard condensed matter physics and high energy physics, and rather interdisciplinary. He has recently concentrated on the study of transport out of equilibrium in nanostructures, and in phase transitions in disordered electronic systems. In the latter case, many of the techniques he uses are common with string theory. | |
Research Keywords |
|
| quantum field theories, statistical mechanics, non perturbative effects, transport out of equilibrium, AdS/CFT correspondence | |

New Courses Developed |

Conformal invariance and quantum informaiton, Physics/Graduate, This class will provide an elementary introduction to conformal field theory from the point of view of condensed matter physics. Applications to the quantum information aspects of quantum critical points and their vicinity will be discussed. In the process, some elements of the bosonization technique will also be introduced.,

Soft Condensed Matter Physics, Physics/Graduate, Soft condensed matter physics deals with properties of matter that are closely related with biological systems. While quantum effects are then mostly negligible, a plethora of new phenomena occur: friction, fluctuations and surface effects become crucial, and matter, while ill-condensed, often self assembles into new structures such as membranes, foams, colloids etc. With the fascinating properties of polymers and liquid crystals added, this physics s is truly one of the most exciting frontiers of modern
science, bubbling with challenges, experiments, and a seemingly
infinite array of potential applications.
This course will provide an introduction to the field, on a par with its hard condensed matter cousin PHY540.
Graduate students from physics and elsewhere will be welcome.
The technical level
will be very introductory, and only basic knowledge of thermodynamics and
statistical mechanics will be required. No prior knowledge of biology
will be expected.,

Methods in the study of complex systems, Physics/Graduate, The rules governing the behaviour of complex systems at the smallest
scales are usually rather well known. The challenge for today's
researcher is not to understand these rules, but rather, how they can,
once the multiplicity of scales and the sometimes gigantic size of the
systems is taken into account, give rise to collective behaviours as
complex and organized as those, for instance, of live beings.
Progress toward this goal has been slow but steady, and a
handful of ideas and methods, with a rather universal range of
applicability, have emerged in the last 15 years or so, which I will
describe in this course. Examples will usually be
drawn from biology, earth sciences
and, more often than not, the stock market.
The level will be rather elementary, and the bulk of the course
accessible to motivated graduate students in any of the sciences or
engineering schools. More advanced topics will also be
proposed through optional reading.,

Introduction to Biological Physics, Physics/Graduate, Biological physics is truly one of the most exciting frontiers of modern
science, bubbling with challenges, experiments, and a seemingly

The purpose of this course is to give a general introduction to
the field for motivated graduate students from physics and elsewhere.
The technical level
will be very introductory, and only basic knowledge of thermodynamics and
statistical mechanics will be required. No prior knowledge of biology
will be expected. The course will have an important
descriptive component, and otherwise focus on three main research
areas: sequences alignment, proteins folding, and (nano) biological
motors.,
