Biographical Sketch

1990 Vordiplom Physics: Technical University of berlin 1995 PhD Physics: Florida State University 1998 - present: faculty member at the University of Southern California My research group is interested in topics related to quantum magnetism, superconductivity, and nanotechnology. We investigate microscopic models of interacting electronic systems, and use numerical techniques, such as Quantum Monte Carlo and Exact Diagonalization, to find their phase diagrams, ground state properties, and excitation spectra.

Description of Research

Summary Statement of Research Interests

I study topics related to quantum phase transitions, superconductivity, and nanotechnology. My research group investigates microscopic models of interacting electronic systems, using numerical techniques such as Quantum Monte Carlo, to understand their phase diagrams, thermodynamic properties, and excitation spectra. Recently, we have applied the stochastic series expansion algorithm to study field induced phase transitions in quantum spin liquids, developed optimization algorithms to construct nano-scale opto-electronic devices, and generalized the BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) theory to investigate the consequences of unconventional superconductivity in strongly correlated materials. This work is motivated by and connected to recent experiments in the fields of quantum antiferromagnetism, high-temperature and heavy-fermion superconductivity, and nano-photonics. Lately, I have also been interested in the optimization of receptor models describing spike transport across neural synapses.
