Many new microbial lipids found in nature have fundamentally novel structures without known analogs in cultured microbes. This previously hidden lipid complexity generates new, exciting opportunities for tackling problems in microbial ecology, biogeochemistry and paleoceanography. I will discuss recent progress in linking novel lipids to major uncultured, ubiquitous archaeal groups that inhabit the marine and sedimentary realm, revealing secrets regarding the lipid producers’ life strategies. In this context, I will present my lab’s latest innovation, that is, the laser-based molecular imaging of microbial lipids in marine sediment cores, and its potential for reconstructing past environmental conditions at ultra-high temporal resolution.
