I’m a part of the USC Helenes, which is an all female service organization that serves the community and our very own campus. We are also known as the official hostesses of USC; for example, we escorted some very important people for the Doheny Library’s Scripter Awards. I’m on the executive board as historian/ publicist this year and was a Rosebud in Spring 2010.
It’s almost April, which means that’s it’s our busiest month in the spring semester. Tomorrow, we have Service in the Park, which is a series of hands-on projects helping the greater LA area, and on Friday, we have Havana Nights, which is an evening of dinner and dancing to benefit the Downtown Women’s Center, our philanthropy.
The weekend after is Songfest, which is where the Greek Community as well as the Trojan Knights & Helenes sing and dance to benefit Troy Camp. The weekend after that, it’s Relay for Life, where Helenes is the brain cancer team. Last year, we had the most walkers on the track at 4 am! The weekend after that, it’s Swim with Mike, which raises money for scholarships for handicapped athletes. That same weekend, it’s also Spirits in Action, which provides a day of fun for disabled children from around LA.
My life is Helenes but I love every moment of it! I have met so many great women that are actively involved on campus and every single one of them is a role model. I have met some of my best friends through Helenes and know that I always have someone to lean on. We get to serve together to benefit the school we love and the city we live in. Besides, what’s more fun than helping little children with homework, playing Wii with the elderly, or playing with sheltered animals, all with your friends?
If you are interested, we have recruitment at the beginning of fall and spring semester.
