Who would have thought that it would be possible to go outdoor ice skating in Los Angeles? Well, as an LA native, I too was skeptical until I passed LA Live and saw it for myself. The day started with breakfast in the freshman dining hall, EVK. As I ate my Cinnamon Toast Crunch, my friends asked me what my plans were for the day. I nonchalantly responded, “we’re going ice skating at LA Live.” Surprise!

At LA Live we saw so many other SC students (probably because it is less than 2 miles from USC!) and quickly found other people we knew. As we rented skates we realized that none of us have ever ice skated before. At first this didn’t seem like a problem because we figured it should be pretty similar to rollerblading. Well, let me give you some advice: I’ve learned a few things my freshman year and this is one of them: don’t assume that ice skating and roller blading are the same.

Despite my false assumption, the day was a blast. I didn’t realize how much fun ice skating would be, and to top it all off everything was 10%-off for us because we were USC students! The day ended with lots of laughs and bruises that will last a lot longer than ice in LA weather.

I’m originally from LA, but I keep finding out that there is still so much left for me to explore. LA is famous for her art, sport teams (GO Lakers!), museums, celebrities, theater, and immense diversity, but who would have thought to include outdoor ice skating rinks? Well now I’ll always be sure to include it. After all, how can you pass up ice skating in a T-shirt?
