If you love music and are an enthusiastic concert-goer like me, USC is a great place to be.
Los Angeles has a strong music scene, hosting a huge range of bands and recording artists each year. Even the annual Grammy Nomination concert is held less than a mile away from campus at the Nokia Theatre at LA Live. The Wiltern, The Staple Center, and many other venues host some of the biggest artists performing today, including Katy Perry, Chris Brown, and the Script.
But you don’t even need to leave campus to attend a great concert. Last semester alone, USC hosted Tokyo Police Club and Cobra Starship at the Welcome Back Concert and Conquest Rally. Both of these concerts are held on McCarthy Quad and are completely free for USC students. How great is that? Pretty great!
This semester I am excited to work with my fellow students on the USC Concerts Committee to design the line up for Springfest, USC’s all-day music festival featuring 12 different bands. Springfest is one of my favorite parts of the spring semester. Last year, Rooney, Augustana, and Mos Def were just a few of the bands that performed.
Even if you can’t make it to an off campus concert or a special event like Springfest, there are always opportunities to go and support one of the many on-campus a capella groups and talented student performers. With USC’s Thorton School of Music offering unique degree programs in American Popular Music and Music Industry, you better believe that open mic night at GroundZero Coffee House on-campus is much more impressive than your average karaoke hour. Who knows– you might even get to see the next Britney Spears or J Cole before even graduating college!
